Procedure detailHigh tibial osteotomy is a joint-preserving procedure offered to younger, more active patients with single-compartment knee arthritis — most often medial-compartment osteoarthritis associated with a varus ("bow-legged") alignment.
The tibia is partially divided and realigned to shift weight-bearing across the joint away from the worn compartment, then fixed with a plate and screws. This unloads the arthritic side, relieves pain and can delay or avoid the need for knee replacement.
Recovery involves a period of protected weight-bearing followed by physiotherapy. Most patients return to active recreation between 4 and 6 months after surgery.
