04 · Approach

Surgical decisions made with the time they deserve.

Conservative first, surgical when the evidence supports it. Mr Gormack works through diagnosis, imaging, non-surgical options, and — where appropriate — the right surgical technique for your anatomy and your life.

Step 01

First appointment

Referral required from a GP, physio, or other health professional. Mr Gormack discusses your condition, examines the joint, reviews imaging and treatment options.

Step 02

Planning for surgery

Pre-admission pack, anaesthetic questionnaire, medication and fasting guidance, plus pre-surgery optimisation (nutrition, exercise, smoking, diabetes).

Step 03

After surgery

Wound care, follow-up at 10–14 days, driving and return-to-work timelines, normal vs concerning symptoms, and rehabilitation timing.

06 · Patient FAQ

The questions most patients ask first.

Do I need a referral?
Yes — referrals come from a GP, physio, or other health professional. Bring details of your injury, prior treatment records, imaging, and ACC claim info if relevant.
How does payment work?
ACC-covered consultations are no charge. As a Southern Cross Affiliated Provider we direct-claim where possible. Other insurers and private patients pay at the time with a receipt provided.
How long will I be in hospital?
Same-day discharge for arthroscopies. One night for shoulder/knee reconstruction or hip arthroscopy. Two to three nights for hip and knee replacement. Anterior approach hip patients are typically home in 1–2 nights.
When can I drive again?
1–2 weeks after knee arthroscopy; 3–4 weeks after ACL reconstruction or hip arthroscopy; about 6 weeks after knee/hip replacement or shoulder surgery.
Will I need physiotherapy?
Yes — we plan rehabilitation around your procedure. Physiotherapy is usually held off for the first two weeks while wounds heal, then ramps up by week.
